Winter wear suitable for the weather like a hat, gloves, boots, jacket, etc.Toboggan or sled ( this GT Racer brings back so many awesome memories as a kid!).One thing I’ve personally been doing this year is getting my outdoor gear before it sells out! A lot of these winter sports are becoming widely popular as people are looking to spend more time outdoors in socially-distanced environments. Photo: Pits Riccardo What to bring sledding During this pandemic – establish a route for going up and down the hill for flow of traffic, and maintain physical distance between tobogganers.Use a proper sled or toboggan and check your equipment (I remember using makeshift ones when I was younger, and they didn’t provide any control – I flew off more times than I can count!).It is recommended that children wear helmets and are supervised at all times.Avoid going down head first, towards a road, fence, or body of water.Avoid going out on icy days – it reduces friction and can cause loss of control, and less cushioning for those who fall off their sled!.Dress appropriately for the weather and in layers ( think gloves, hats, and warm jackets, but avoid loose scarves or drawstrings!).Mel Stewart Lake Gibson Conservation Area.Welland Canal Lock 7 ( not currently available as of January 2022).Photo: Charles Edward Miller Where to go sledding and tobogganing in Welland

The Niagara Region transforms into a winter wonderland during the coldest season of the year, making it a wintry sports fans’ paradise! This is the perfect year to try new things, especially outdoors. Slide 700 feet down groomed lanes in a snow tube to a soft landing, and then ride the tow line back to the top for another run. These past couple of years has put a halt to a lot of indoor winter activities, but it’s a great excuse to get outdoors and experience what the Niagara Region has to offer!įortunately for those us living in Niagara, there are plenty of areas to embrace our Canadian winters with this fun, family-friendly activity – sledding! It’s time to reconnect with the great outdoors and create new memories amongst an upside-down year. There is even a gradual walkway up the hill to make the trek to the top easier for both kids and parents. More slopes = less waiting in line! West ParkĪt this Carmel Clay park, kids can slide down the two-story sledding hill. This park features 2 designated sledding areas on one massive hill – an East slope and a South slope.
